When do Christmas markets open and close?

The dates move every year. Here are the patterns that hold, and the traps that catch people planning a trip.

There is no single Christmas market season, and the assumption that there is causes more ruined trips than anything else. Opening dates cluster; closing dates scatter wildly.

Opening: mid-to-late November, mostly

Most European markets open in the second half of November. German markets traditionally tie their opening to Advent, which moves the date by up to a week from year to year. UK markets are less tied to the church calendar and increasingly open earlier — Bristol opens in early November, and New York’s Bryant Park Winter Village opens in late October.

Closing: this is where trips go wrong

Closing dates vary far more than opening dates, and they fall into three broad groups.

Closing before Christmas. A surprising number finish well before the 25th. Bath closes in mid-December, and several UK markets follow suit. If you are planning a market visit in the last week before Christmas, check first — you may be too late.

Closing on the 23rd or 24th. The German pattern, and the most common. Nuremberg, Dresden and Chicago all finish on Christmas Eve, usually at lunchtime.

Running into January. Common in central and eastern Europe and increasingly in the UK. Prague and Tallinn run to 6 January; Brussels and Edinburgh into early January.

The practical consequence: a trip between Christmas and New Year works in Prague, Tallinn, Vienna, Brussels or Edinburgh. The same trip through Germany will find shut squares.

The single-day events

A lights switch-on lasts one evening. A truck tour stop lasts a day or two. Durham’s festival is a single weekend. For these the date is not a detail, it is the whole thing.

Closure days inside the run

Easy to miss. Cologne closes for Totensonntag in late November. York closes every Tuesday. Many markets close on Christmas Day itself even when running into January, and hours are usually cut short on Christmas Eve.

When next year’s dates get announced

Roughly: the big European markets confirm from around June, UK city markets through September and October, smaller towns and switch-ons in October and November, and the Coca-Cola truck route in mid-to-late November. Anything you find earlier than that is usually an estimate based on last year.

How to check properly

Go to the organiser’s own site. Aggregator listings recycle previous years’ dates with alarming frequency — we found one publishing a 2025 date under a 2026 heading, given away because the weekday no longer matched.

Every listing on this site shows the date we last checked it and links to the source we checked it against. Where 2026 dates have not been announced, we say so rather than guessing.
