Officially the St Nicholas Fair, York’s market runs down Parliament Street and through St Sampson’s Square, with the Shambles and the Minster a couple of minutes’ walk away. The stallholders lean heavily towards Yorkshire makers and producers, which makes it one of the better UK markets for buying something you could not get at home. Unusually, it closes on Tuesdays — worth checking before you plan a midweek trip.
