Bryant Park Winter Village

Bryant Park’s Winter Village is the most European of the American Christmas markets, and the only one in Manhattan that genuinely feels like one. Over 180 glass-fronted kiosks ring a free public ice rink, in a park hemmed in by midtown skyscrapers directly behind the New York Public Library.

The rink is free, which in Manhattan is remarkable

Admission to the rink costs nothing if you bring your own skates — a genuine rarity in a city where the Rockefeller Center and Central Park rinks both charge substantially. Skate hire is available for a fee, and the rink is busy, but the principle stands: this is a free thing to do in the middle of midtown.

The kiosks

The vendor mix skews towards New York designers, makers and food businesses rather than imported ornaments, which makes it a better bet for a distinctive present than the tourist stalls elsewhere in the city. The food kiosks are strong — this is New York — and there is a heated bar and igloo-style dining setup beside the rink.

Getting there

Bryant Park sits between Fifth and Sixth Avenues at 42nd Street. Bryant Park station on the B, D, F and M lines is on the corner, Times Square and Grand Central are both a short walk, and it is directly on the route between them.

Timing, which works differently here

The Winter Village opens far earlier than European markets — late October — and the shops run through to early January, while the rink stays open until the end of February. That long tail is useful: a January or February visit to New York can still include the rink long after every Christmas market in Europe has been dismantled.

When to go

Evenings and weekends between Thanksgiving and Christmas are extremely busy — this is one of midtown’s busiest attractions in that window. Weekday mornings are calm. 2026 marks the village’s twenty-fifth season.
