Bath Christmas Market

Bath is the market most often named as Britain’s best, and the reason is the streets rather than the stalls. The chalets thread through the narrow Georgian lanes around the Abbey and the Roman Baths — Abbey Green, York Street, Kingston Parade, Stall Street — so you are shopping inside a World Heritage city centre built of honey-coloured stone, not in a car park with bunting.

Why it is good for actual presents

The organisers weight the selection heavily towards independent makers from the South West. That is the practical difference between Bath and the bigger city markets: a high proportion of what is for sale is made by the person selling it, and you are unlikely to find it in a shop at home. Ceramics, textiles, jewellery, prints, wooden kitchenware, soap, and a strong showing of Somerset and Wiltshire food and drink.

Eating and drinking

Local cider and perry, Bath Blue and other West Country cheeses, hog roast, and the usual mulled wine. The Pump Room and the pubs around the Abbey are all in the middle of it, so unlike many markets you are never more than a minute from somewhere warm to sit down.

Getting there

Bath Spa station is a five-minute walk from the Abbey and there are direct trains from London Paddington, Bristol and Cardiff. Do not drive: the city centre is small, medieval in layout, and parking in December is genuinely miserable. Park and ride is the sensible option if you must come by car.

When to go — and this matters more here than most places

Bath’s lanes are narrow, and that charm becomes a problem at capacity. Saturdays in December are shoulder-to-shoulder to the point where you shuffle through single file and cannot stop at a stall without blocking the street. Go on a weekday. Thursday evening, when the market is open until eight and lit, is the best compromise between atmosphere and space.

The thing to check

Bath closes earlier than most UK markets — mid-December rather than Christmas Eve. People routinely plan a trip for the week before Christmas and find it packed up. Check the closing date before you book anything.
