Durham Christmas Festival

Durham does something nobody else does: instead of a market running for six weeks, it compresses everything into a single weekend at the start of December. That is the single most important thing to know about it — arrive on the wrong weekend and there is nothing to see.

Three venues at once

The festival runs across three sites simultaneously. The Craft and Producers’ Marquee occupies Palace Green, the lawn between the cathedral and the castle at the top of the peninsula. The Festive Outdoor Market fills Durham Market Place below. And the Victorian Market Hall runs its own indoor market alongside. The whole thing is within about ten minutes’ walk end to end, though the hill between them is steep.

Why the setting is exceptional

Durham Cathedral and Castle sit together on a rocky peninsula inside a loop of the River Wear, and the pair are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Holding a craft market on Palace Green means standing between a Norman cathedral — arguably the finest Romanesque building in Europe — and an eleventh-century castle. No other British market has a setting like it.

Getting there

Durham station is on the East Coast Main Line, about fifteen minutes’ walk from the Market Place, though the walk back up is a proper climb. The city is small and the festival is entirely walkable. Because it is a three-day event in a small city, accommodation that weekend books up early and prices rise accordingly.

When to go

It is busy — a whole season’s worth of visitors compressed into three days. Friday is the calmest of the three. The cathedral runs its Advent programme alongside, and the building is lit, which makes Friday or Saturday evening the pick.

Worth knowing

The 2026 festival runs 4 to 6 December only. Entry to the outdoor markets is free. If you cannot make that weekend, Durham still has the cathedral, the castle and the Christmas lights, but not the market.
