Cardiff Christmas Lights Switch-On

Cardiff’s Christmas lights come on on Thursday 12 November 2026, as confirmed by Cardiff Council. The same day marks the opening of the city’s Winter Wonderland at Cardiff Castle and on City Hall Lawn, and the day the Cardiff Christmas Market opens across the city centre streets.

One day, three openings

That makes 12 November the day to be in Cardiff if you want to see the city’s Christmas start in one go: the lights coming on, the market’s first day, and Winter Wonderland opening with its ice rink, ice walk, a new accessible big wheel, a new curling experience and free family entertainment. Winter Wonderland runs until 3 January 2027.

Also new this year

From 19 November, Christmas at Bute Park opens its mile-long illuminated trail behind the castle — a separately ticketed event, and one of the biggest light trails in Wales.

Getting there

Cardiff Central and Queen Street stations are both within ten minutes’ walk of the castle and the market streets. The city centre is largely pedestrianised, but roads around the castle are busy on opening night.

Switch-on crowds build well before the countdown, so arrive early if you want to see the stage, and dress for standing still outdoors after dark — see our guide to what to wear.

Worth knowing

Because the market, Winter Wonderland and the lights all start on the same Thursday, the city centre is unusually busy that evening. If you would rather see the lights than the crowds, any evening the following week gives you the same lights with room to move.
