Cardiff Christmas Market

Cardiff runs the biggest market in Wales by a distance — over 200 wooden chalets spread across five pedestrianised streets in the city centre: St John Street, Working Street, Trinity Street, Hills Street and The Hayes, collectively rebranded the Festive Quarter for the season.

A genuine Welsh makers’ market

This is the important distinction. Cardiff’s market is not a German import with a Welsh postcode; it has run for over thirty years and the chalets are dominated by Welsh craft, food and drink producers. Welsh cakes, bara brith, Welsh gin and whisky, slate homeware, love spoons, wool, ceramics and a great deal of local cheese. If you want to take something home that is actually from where you have been, Cardiff is one of the best markets in Britain for it.

Getting there and around

Cardiff Central is a ten-minute walk from The Hayes, and Cardiff Queen Street is closer still. The whole market is pedestrianised and flat, which makes it one of the more accessible markets in the UK. The Victorian and Edwardian arcades — Castle, High Street, Morgan and the rest — run off the same streets and are full of independents, which makes for an excellent wet-weather alternative.

When to go

Trading is Monday to Saturday 10am to 6pm, with a late night to 7pm on Thursdays in December, and Sunday 10am to 5pm. Those are shorter hours than the big English markets, and it catches people out expecting a late evening visit. Cardiff on a match day is a different city entirely — check the rugby and football fixtures before travelling.

Worth knowing

It runs 12 November to 23 December 2026. Cardiff Castle and the Winter Wonderland in the city centre run alongside the market and are separately ticketed.

The rest of Cardiff’s Christmas

The market is one part of a larger programme. Cardiff’s Winter Wonderland, usually in the civic centre near City Hall, adds an ice rink, an observation wheel and funfair rides — separately ticketed, unlike the market. Cardiff Castle sits at the top of the same streets and runs its own seasonal events.

Wet weather, which is likely

This is Cardiff in December, and the market is entirely outdoors. The saving grace is that the Victorian and Edwardian arcades run directly off the market streets — Castle Arcade, High Street Arcade, Morgan Arcade and the Royal Arcade among them — and they are full of independent shops, coffee places and record stores. If it turns, you are never more than thirty seconds from cover, which is not true of most UK markets.
