Christmas at Bute Park

Christmas at Bute Park is an illuminated trail through the great park that runs behind Cardiff Castle along the River Taff. For 2026 it runs from 19 November to 31 December, taking visitors on a mile-long route through four themed worlds: Magic, Wonder, Hope and Joy.

What a light trail is

Light trails are a different kind of Christmas outing from a market. Rather than stalls and mulled wine, you walk a set route after dark through installations — lit tunnels, projections, illuminated trees and sculptures set to music. They are ticketed with timed entry, which keeps numbers manageable, and a visit typically takes an hour or so.

Christmas at Bute Park is ticketed. Tickets are sold through Visit Cardiff; weekend evenings and the week before Christmas sell out first, so book ahead if you have a particular night in mind.

Practicalities

Getting there

Bute Park sits right beside the castle in the centre of Cardiff. Cardiff Central and Queen Street stations are both about ten to fifteen minutes’ walk away.

Make a night of it

The trail is a few minutes’ walk from the Cardiff Christmas Market and from Winter Wonderland at the castle and City Hall, which run over the same season. Arrive in the late afternoon, see the market while the shops are open, and walk the trail after dark.

Worth knowing

The trail is a walking route rather than a spectacle you watch from one spot, so allow the full hour, and bear in mind that pushchair and wheelchair access depends on the route layout — check with the organiser when you book.
