Innsbruck’s old-town Christmas market sets up in the medieval lanes beneath the Golden Roof, the gilded balcony built for Emperor Maximilian I and the city’s best-known landmark. With the snow-capped peaks of the Nordkette rising straight up behind the rooftops, few Christmas markets have a better backdrop.
Dates for 2026
The old-town market runs from Friday 13 November to Wednesday 23 December 2026, according to the official Innsbruck Christmas markets site. It’s open daily 11am–9pm; the craft stalls stop trading at 8pm, while food and drink carry on until closing.
Innsbruck’s other markets
The old town is one of several Christmas markets around the city, all listed on the same official site. If you’re visiting after 23 December, two of them carry on into January:
- Marktplatz, beside the River Inn: the family market, 13 November to 23 December, daily 11am–9pm.
- Maria-Theresien-Straße: the modern market, 25 November 2026 to 6 January 2027, daily 11am–9pm.
- Hungerburg, high above the city: the panorama market, 20 November 2026 to 6 January 2027, with short hours (noon–3pm) on Christmas Eve.
- St. Nikolaus: 20 November to 23 December, evenings only, 4pm–9pm.
Getting there
Innsbruck Hauptbahnhof is about ten minutes’ walk from the old town. The Hungerburg funicular, designed by Zaha Hadid, climbs from Congress station on the edge of the old town to the Hungerburg market. From there the Nordkette cable cars continue towards the summit.
Make a day of it
The Imperial Palace (Hofburg) and the Court Church (Hofkirche), with its bronze figures around Maximilian’s cenotaph, are a few minutes from the Golden Roof. Climb the Stadtturm, the old town tower, for a view down onto the stalls.
