Carnaby Street Christmas Lights Switch-On

Carnaby Street is usually the first of the big West End streets to light up, and 2026 is no exception: its switch-on is on Wednesday 4 November, well ahead of most of the country. The street hosts an evening of festive entertainment to mark the start of the season in Soho.

The 2026 theme

Carnaby’s installations are themed each year rather than traditional, and they are often the most talked-about in London. For 2026 the celebrations are inspired by the feel-good nostalgia of the 1990s, with the idea of bringing people together. Expect something designed to be photographed rather than a string of fairy lights.

Why the date matters

An early November switch-on means Carnaby’s lights are up for the whole of the Christmas shopping season. If you miss the event itself, the installation stays lit through to the new year — so you have not missed the lights, only the party.

Getting there

Oxford Circus is the nearest tube station, a couple of minutes’ walk; Piccadilly Circus is a little further. Carnaby Street is pedestrianised, which helps, but the surrounding streets are very busy on switch-on evening and through the weekends that follow.

Make an evening of it

Carnaby sits between Regent Street and Soho, so the Regent Street angels and the rest of the West End lights are a few minutes’ walk away once they are switched on. Kingly Court, just off Carnaby, has three floors of restaurants around a covered courtyard — useful on a cold November night.

Worth knowing

Carnaby’s switch-on falls on a Wednesday, which means the crowd is largely people coming straight from work. Arriving early in the evening, before offices empty, is the easiest way to get a good spot on the street.
