Most cathedral markets set up in the close outside. St Edmundsbury’s is held inside the cathedral, with more than fifty stallholders from Suffolk and beyond trading beneath the nave and the soaring lantern tower. It is small, warm, dry and quite unlike an outdoor market — and in late November, that last point matters.
Three days only
For 2026 the market runs from Thursday 26 to Saturday 28 November, open 10am to 4.30pm each day, with last entry at 4pm. There is no evening opening, so this is a daytime visit.
Entry
Entry is £2 per person, which goes towards the cathedral. As a safety measure, bags may be searched on the way in, so allow a few extra minutes at busy times.
What to expect
A strong showing of local makers and producers — crafts, gifts, food and seasonal treats — with carols and live music through the day. It is an excellent place to buy something genuinely local, and much calmer than a big city market.
Getting there
The cathedral stands on Angel Hill in the centre of Bury St Edmunds, about fifteen minutes’ walk from the station. The town is compact and easy to get around on foot.
Make a day of it
The Abbey Gardens, beside the cathedral, contain the ruins of one of the richest Benedictine abbeys in medieval England — where the barons are said to have sworn to force King John to accept Magna Carta. The town’s own twice-weekly market, its Georgian streets and the Theatre Royal, one of the oldest working Regency theatres in the country, make it an easy place to spend a full day.
