Strasbourg Christkindelsmärik

France's oldest Christmas market, in the 'Capital of Christmas'. 2026 dates not yet announced.

Dates to be announced

The organiser has not yet confirmed this year's dates, and the dates circulating online are either estimates or carried over from a previous year — so we are not publishing them as fact. The City of Strasbourg says the official 2026 dates will be published on its Christmas site once approved. The 2025 market ran from 26 November to 24 December.

Last checked 3 October 2026. We are watching for the official announcement and will update this page. How we check

Strasbourg calls itself the Capitale de Noël, the Capital of Christmas, and its Christkindelsmärik (“market of the Christ Child”) has a fair claim to the title. The city dates the market to 1570, which makes it the oldest in France. Today it spreads across the historic centre, with the largest concentrations of chalets on the Place Broglie and around the cathedral.

Why there are no dates here yet

The City of Strasbourg’s official Christmas site says that the 2026 dates will be published there once they have been approved. Several websites are already quoting dates for 2026, and they don’t agree with each other. Last year’s market ran from 26 November to 24 December 2025, and this year’s will probably follow a similar pattern. But “probably” isn’t a date, so we’re waiting for the city.

What to expect

Based on recent years: hundreds of wooden chalets across the old town, a giant Christmas tree on the Place Kléber, and illuminations strung across the medieval streets. You’ll also find bredele (Alsatian Christmas biscuits), vin chaud and Alsatian food. The old town, the Grande Île, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Getting there

Strasbourg station is around fifteen minutes’ walk from the cathedral, with high-speed trains from Paris in under two hours. The trams stop at the Homme de Fer and Broglie, right by the market.

Make a day of it

Climb the cathedral platform for a view over the rooftops, watch the astronomical clock, and walk the canals of Petite France. Colmar’s markets, with confirmed 2026 dates, are half an hour away by train.

When will we know?

We check the official source every week and will update this page the day the dates are confirmed. In the meantime, our What’s open? tool shows the markets that have confirmed dates for any day you’re travelling.
