Colmar, in the heart of the Alsace wine country, holds not one Christmas market but six, threaded through an old town of half-timbered houses, canals and cobbled squares. Under the lights it looks almost too perfect to be real, and that is a large part of why people come.
Dates for 2026
According to the official Christmas in Colmar site, the markets run from Monday 23 November to Tuesday 29 December 2026. Daily opening hours, and whether the markets open on Christmas Day, haven’t been published for 2026 yet. Our date finder doesn’t assume they do.
The villages nearby
The same official site lists the 2026 dates for the markets in the villages around Colmar, which are well worth combining:
- Eguisheim: 27 November to 30 December
- Turckheim: 27 November to 30 December
- Riquewihr: 27 November to 20 December
- Kaysersberg: 27 November to 20 December
Riquewihr and Kaysersberg finish on 20 December, so go earlier in the season if you want to see those two. We haven’t yet confirmed opening days and hours for the villages; some village markets have traditionally opened on selected days only, so check before you travel.
Getting there
Colmar station is around fifteen minutes’ walk from the old town. Regional trains reach Strasbourg in about half an hour and Basel in under an hour. EuroAirport Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg is the closest airport. Buses and organised tours link Colmar with the wine villages.
Make a day of it
Walk along the canal through Petite Venise, the old fishmongers’ and tanners’ quarters. Stop by the Maison Pfister, with its painted façade and wooden gallery. The Unterlinden Museum houses the Isenheim Altarpiece, one of the masterpieces of late-medieval painting. And this is Alsace: winstubs, tarte flambée and the region’s white wines are part of the experience.
Strasbourg’s famous market is a short train ride away; see our French listings.
Whatever the forecast, you will be standing still outdoors in the cold for longer than you expect — see our guide to what to wear, and use What’s open? to see which markets are trading on the days you travel.
