Dresden Striezelmarkt

First held in 1434, which makes it Germany’s oldest — and it still bakes the definitive Stollen.

Dresden Striezelmarkt

The Striezelmarkt takes its name from Striezel, the early word for the fruited loaf now sold everywhere as Dresden Stollen. The Stollenfest on the second Saturday of Advent parades a giant cake through the city before it is cut with an outsized silver knife. Look for the Erzgebirge woodcraft — nutcrackers and candle arches carved in the mountains south of the city.
