Hamburg’s best-known Christmas market sets up on the Rathausmarkt, in front of the city’s grand neo-Renaissance city hall. It’s run by Roncalli, the circus family, which shows in the theatrical touches. The most famous of these is the flying Santa: Father Christmas and his sleigh and reindeer glide on a wire high over the stalls three times a day.
Dates: provisional
The 2026 market has been reported as running from Monday 23 November to Wednesday 23 December, daily from 11am to 9pm. Opening on the Monday after Totensonntag fits the market’s usual pattern. But Hamburg’s official tourism pages still show last year’s dates (24 November–23 December 2025), so we’re treating 2026 as provisional.
What to expect
There are around 80 stalls of traditional crafts, toys and decorations, plus Glühwein and northern German food, and a historic carousel. The Rathausmarkt is one of more than a dozen Christmas markets around Hamburg. Others include the Fleetinsel, the Gänsemarkt, the Jungfernstieg on the Alster, and Santa Pauli, the adults-only market on the Reeperbahn in St. Pauli.
Getting there
Rathaus U-Bahn station is right on the square, and Jungfernstieg (U-Bahn and S-Bahn) is a couple of minutes away. From Hamburg Hauptbahnhof it’s around fifteen minutes on foot along the Mönckebergstraße shopping street.
Make a day of it
The Speicherstadt warehouse district and the Elbphilharmonie concert hall are a short walk south. The Elbphilharmonie’s public plaza, 37 metres up, gives a free view over the port. Miniatur Wunderland, the world’s largest model railway, is in the Speicherstadt.
When will we know?
We check the official source every week and will update this page the day the dates are confirmed. In the meantime, our What’s open? tool shows the markets that have confirmed dates for any day you’re travelling.
