The setting does most of the work here: the market sits directly beside Cologne Cathedral, with the largest Christmas tree in the Rhineland at its centre. Cologne runs several markets within walking distance of each other, and a stroll between them — cathedral, Alter Markt, Neumarkt, the harbour — makes for one of the best market days in Germany.
