Shifnal, a market town between Telford and Wolverhampton, is planning a refreshed Christmas lights switch-on for 2026. After admitting that its 2025 event “missed the mark”, the town council has promised a more festive, family-friendly evening shaped by residents’ feedback.

The 2026 date

The Shropshire Star has reported the 2026 switch-on as Saturday 28 November, from 4pm to 8.30pm, citing Shifnal Town Council. The date fits the calendar, but the newspaper blocks the automated checks we use and we have not yet found the date on the council’s own site, so we are listing it as provisional.

What’s planned

According to the report, the 2026 event will have an enhanced entertainment programme with more live music, a wider range of children’s activities, and a special appearance from Santa with his sleigh and helpers. It is a town event in the best sense: local, free and easy with young children.

Getting there

Shifnal station is on the line between Wolverhampton and Shrewsbury, a few minutes’ walk from the town centre. Expect road closures in the centre on the evening.

Make a weekend of it

28 November is a busy date for switch-ons in the area: Oakengates, a few miles away in Telford, switches on its lights the same afternoon, and Derby the same day. Ironbridge Gorge, a World Heritage Site, is a short drive away.

Whatever the dates turn out to be, dress for standing still outdoors in the cold — see our guide to what to wear to a Christmas market.
