Derby Christmas Lights Switch-On

Derby switches on its Christmas lights on Saturday 28 November 2026, in a single event that also launches the city’s wider Festive Derby season. Like every switch-on, it is a one-day event: the date is the whole point.

What happens

The switch-on takes place in the Cathedral Quarter around the Market Place and marks the grand launch of Festive Derby, the council’s programme of Christmas events, shopping and entertainment. Derby City Council publishes the full running order and times closer to the day; we will add them here when they are out.

The ice rink — a date we can’t yet confirm

The covered Cathedral Quarter Ice Rink and its Nordic Bar are returning to the Market Place for 2026, running through to New Year’s Eve. We have not listed an opening date for the rink, because the council’s own announcement gives it as “Friday 28 November” in one place and “Saturday 28 November” in another — and 28 November 2026 is a Saturday. Rather than guess which day it opens, we are waiting for the council to clarify. It is exactly the kind of small inconsistency that sends people to a rink on the wrong day.

Getting there

Derby station is about fifteen minutes’ walk from the Market Place. Expect road closures and busy car parks on switch-on day; the train or the bus is the easier way in.

Make a day of it

Derby Cathedral, a few minutes from the Market Place, is famous for the peregrine falcons that nest on its tower. The Museum and Art Gallery holds the world’s finest collection of paintings by Joseph Wright of Derby — his candlelit scenes are well suited to a December afternoon — and the Cathedral Quarter’s independent shops and cafés are all within a short walk.

Worth knowing

Dress for standing outside after dark in late November, and arrive early if you want a view of the stage: switch-on crowds build well before the countdown.
