Derby Christmas Lights Switch-On

Derby switches on its Christmas lights on Saturday 28 November 2026, in a single event that also launches the city’s wider Festive Derby season. Like every switch-on, it is a one-day event: the date is the whole point.

What happens

The switch-on takes place in the Cathedral Quarter around the Market Place and marks the grand launch of Festive Derby, the council’s programme of Christmas events, shopping and entertainment. Derby City Council publishes the full running order and times closer to the day; we will add them here when they are out.

The ice rink and the Sugarplum market

The covered Cathedral Quarter Ice Rink and its Nordic Bar open in the Market Place on the same day as the switch-on — Saturday 28 November — and run until Thursday 31 December. The council’s first announcement gave the rink’s opening as both a Friday and a Saturday; the official Festive Derby site has since settled it as Saturday 28 November, which is the date that matches the calendar. On Saturday 5 December, Derby Market Hall hosts the Sugarplum Christmas Market.

Getting there

Derby station is about fifteen minutes’ walk from the Market Place. Expect road closures and busy car parks on switch-on day; the train or the bus is the easier way in.

Make a day of it

Derby Cathedral, a few minutes from the Market Place, is famous for the peregrine falcons that nest on its tower. The Museum and Art Gallery holds the world’s finest collection of paintings by Joseph Wright of Derby — his candlelit scenes are well suited to a December afternoon — and the Cathedral Quarter’s independent shops and cafés are all within a short walk.

Worth knowing

Dress for standing outside after dark in late November, and arrive early if you want a view of the stage: switch-on crowds build well before the countdown.
