Salzburg’s Christkindlmarkt fills the two linked squares at the heart of the old town, with the cathedral facade on one side and the Residenz on the other, and the fortress lit above. Records of an Advent market here go back to the late fifteenth century. Expect Punsch, Bosna sausages and a strong line in nativity figures and hand-blown glass. The separate markets at Hohensalzburg Fortress and Hellbrunn Palace are both worth the trip out.
