Frankfurt’s Christmas market is one of the largest in Germany: more than 230 decorated stalls spread across the old town, with the half-timbered houses of the Römerberg and the stepped gables of the Römer — Frankfurt’s city hall for six centuries — as the centrepiece. A tall Christmas tree stands in the middle of the square.

Dates for 2026

The market runs from Monday 23 November to Tuesday 22 December 2026, according to Frankfurt’s official tourism board. Note that it finishes before Christmas: by 23 December the stalls are gone.

Where it is

This is less one square than a trail through the centre. The market covers the Römerberg, Paulsplatz (beside St Paul’s Church, where Germany’s first freely elected parliament met in 1848), the riverside Mainkai, Friedrich-Stoltze-Platz, the Hauptwache and the Roßmarkt. You can walk from one end to the other in about fifteen minutes, so it is easy to cover in an evening.

Opening hours

Monday to Saturday 10am–9pm, and Sundays 11am–9pm.

What to try

Frankfurt has its own festive specialities to look out for alongside the usual Glühwein: Bethmännchen, small marzipan-and-almond biscuits, and Frankfurter Brenten, a flat marzipan biscuit. Many stalls also serve hot apple wine (Apfelwein), the city’s signature drink, as an alternative to mulled wine.

Getting there

The U-Bahn station Dom/Römer is right next to the Römerberg. From Frankfurt Hauptbahnhof it is a short U-Bahn ride or a 20-minute walk, and Frankfurt Airport is 15 minutes from the city centre by S-Bahn — useful if you are flying in just for the market.

Make a day of it

Frankfurt Cathedral is a minute’s walk from the Römerberg. Cross the Eiserner Steg footbridge for the museums along the south bank, including the Städel, and for the view back across the river to the skyline.

Whatever the forecast, you will be standing still outdoors in the cold for longer than you expect — see our guide to what to wear, and use What’s open? to see which markets are trading on the days you travel.
