Winchester sets its market in the Inner Close, the walled precinct beside the cathedral, and that enclosure is the whole point. Where a city-centre market is a row of huts along a shopping street, Winchester’s is a self-contained village of around 120 wooden chalets in the lee of one of the longest Gothic cathedrals in Europe, with the building lit above it.

Strongly craft-led

This is one of the best UK markets for buying something genuinely made rather than merely bought in. The chalets are weighted towards artists and makers — ceramics, textiles, glass, jewellery, woodwork, printmaking — with a good share from Hampshire and the surrounding counties. The cathedral also runs a charity chalet programme, rotating local causes through a pitch across the season.

The ice rink and the cathedral

An open-air rink sits alongside the market in the Close, which makes this a workable family visit as well as a shopping one. And the cathedral itself is the other half of the day: its Advent and carol programme runs throughout, the nave is spectacular, and Jane Austen is buried in the north aisle.

Getting there

Winchester station is about fifteen minutes’ walk from the cathedral, with fast trains from London Waterloo in around an hour. The city is compact and walkable; parking near the centre in December is difficult and the park and ride is the better option.

When to go

Winchester is a small city and the Close is an enclosed space, so it reaches capacity quickly. Weekends are very busy and there can be queues to get into the Close itself. Weekday mornings are calm. It stays open until eight on Friday and Saturday, which is the best time for atmosphere — the cathedral floodlit above the lit chalets is the reason to come after dark.
