Swindon Christmas Lights Switch-On

Swindon’s town centre switch-on runs across a Sunday afternoon at Wharf Green and along the Brunel Centre, and like most switch-ons it packs an entire event into about four hours.

What happens

Live entertainment from local schools, choirs and performers on a stage at Wharf Green, a festive market with seasonal food and gift stalls, and the countdown and switch-on itself in the early evening, typically with a guest doing the honours. Free to attend, nothing to book.

Getting there

Wharf Green is about five minutes’ walk from Swindon station, with fast trains from London Paddington, Bristol, Bath and Cardiff. The Brunel Centre car parks are the obvious choice by car, but expect congestion and some road closures around the event.

Why the date matters

This is a one-day event: Sunday 15 November 2026, 3pm to 7pm. Miss it and there is nothing to come back for. We have confirmed the date and the weekday — a useful check, because Swindon also has a separate switch-on at Lydiard Park, and we found at least one listing giving that event a date and weekday that do not match, which is the classic sign of last year’s information being republished.

Worth knowing

What to expect if you have not been to one

A town switch-on is a very different thing from a Christmas market, and it is worth knowing the shape of it. There is no admission and nothing to book. The entertainment is local — school choirs, dance schools, community groups — rather than professional, and that is rather the point: people come to watch their own children on a stage in the town centre. The market element is a handful of stalls rather than a hundred chalets.

The countdown itself takes about a minute. Everything before it is the actual event.

Arriving

If you want to be near the stage for the countdown, arrive at least an hour early; Wharf Green fills from the front. If you are bringing a buggy, the edges of the green and the Brunel Centre frontage are considerably easier to navigate than the middle.
