Newcastle arranges its market around Grey’s Monument and down Grey Street, Grainger Street and Nelson Street — which means you are shopping along a sweep of Georgian frontages that regularly gets called the finest street in England. It is a considerably better backdrop than most city-centre markets manage.
Scale and character
Over 70 traders, and the organisers have pushed hard on local representation, so the balance of North East makers and food producers is better than at many big-city markets. Expect regional cheese, gin, chocolate, ceramics, prints and woollens alongside the usual bratwurst and mulled wine. Old Eldon Square takes the overflow.
The market has grown very quickly — it now draws over two million visits a season — and that growth is visible in how busy Grey Street gets on a December Saturday.
Getting there
Newcastle Central is about ten minutes’ walk up Grainger Street, and Monument Metro station is directly underneath the market. The Metro makes Gateshead, the Quayside and the coast easy add-ons.
When to go
Monday to Saturday it runs 10am to 8pm, Sunday 10am to 5pm. The Sunday short day surprises people. Weekday evenings are the best combination of lit stalls and manageable crowds; Saturdays are extremely busy, particularly in the last fortnight.
Worth knowing
It runs from Thursday 19 November to Wednesday 23 December 2026, as confirmed by Newcastle City Council. Newcastle’s wider Christmas programme includes a rink and a funfair, and the Quayside Seaside and Sunday market are both worth the short walk down to the river if you are making a weekend of it.
What else is on
Newcastle’s wider festive programme is worth building a day around rather than treating the market as the whole trip. There is usually an outdoor rink and a funfair in the city centre, and the Christmas lights run the length of Northumberland Street. The Grainger Market — the covered Victorian market hall a minute from Grey’s Monument — is open through December and is an excellent, cheap, and considerably warmer alternative for food.
Making a weekend of it
The Quayside is fifteen minutes downhill, with the Tyne bridges lit at night, the Baltic gallery and the Sage across the water in Gateshead. Newcastle is also the practical base for Durham — fifteen minutes by train — which is worth pairing if your visit coincides with Durham’s three-day festival in early December.
