Greenwich starts its Christmas with a lantern parade. On Wednesday 18 November 2026, Greenwich Market holds its annual Lantern Parade and Christmas Lights Switch-On, with a procession of lanterns through the streets of historic Greenwich before the market’s lights come on.

What makes it different

Most switch-ons are a stage, a presenter and a countdown. Greenwich’s is built around a lantern procession, which makes it gentler and more of a community occasion — and particularly good with children, who can join in rather than just watch. The covered market, under its Victorian iron-and-glass roof, makes a fine setting when it is lit.

Times

Greenwich Market has confirmed the date; it publishes the parade route and timings nearer the day. Expect late afternoon into early evening, as the light goes. We will add the times here when they are out.

The market itself

Greenwich Market trades all year with crafts, antiques, vintage and street food, and it takes on a Christmas character from the switch-on onwards. We have not yet listed its 2026 Christmas trading dates, because the market has not confirmed them; they are on our Awaiting Dates list.

Getting there

Cutty Sark DLR station is a two-minute walk from the market. Greenwich mainline station and the Thames Clippers river bus to Greenwich Pier are both close by — arriving by river is the best way in.

Make an evening of it

The Cutty Sark, the Old Royal Naval College and its Painted Hall, and the Royal Observatory on the hill in Greenwich Park are all within a short walk. The view of London from the Observatory at dusk is one of the best in the city.

Dress for standing still outdoors after dark — see our guide to what to wear.

When to go

The switch-on falls on a Wednesday, so many families come straight from school and the crowd builds from mid-afternoon. If you want to see the parade set off, arrive early; if you just want the lights, they stay on through the season.
