Norwich’s Christkindl Market is short and deliberate: ten days in mid-December, when Chapelfield Gardens in the city centre becomes an alpine village of around 80 wooden chalets. It is run by Fine City Events with a clear emphasis on local and regional makers, which makes it a better bet for a genuinely local present than the big touring city markets.
Short season — plan around it
For 2026 the market runs from Friday 11 to Sunday 20 December, open 10am to 9pm every day. That is a much tighter window than most UK markets, which open in November and run for five or six weeks. If you are planning a trip to Norwich in late November expecting a Christmas market, this one will not be there yet.
Admission
Children go in without charge every day. Adults pay a small entry fare at peak times, with quieter times free to enter; the organiser publishes the exact arrangement on its site. It is worth checking before you go if you want to avoid the charge — midweek daytime is the cheap time to visit.
What to expect
Traditional wooden chalets, artisan crafts from Norfolk and East Anglian makers, seasonal street food, and live festive entertainment through the day and evening. The market map, with the full list of traders, is published in November once all the vendors are confirmed.
Getting there
Chapelfield Gardens sits on the western edge of the city centre, right beside the Chantry Place shopping centre. Norwich railway station is about twenty minutes’ walk across the centre, or a short bus ride, with direct trains from London Liverpool Street in under two hours.
Make a day of it
Norwich is one of the best-preserved medieval cities in England. The cathedral has the second-tallest spire in the country and a spectacular cloister; Elm Hill is a cobbled street of timber-framed houses; and Norwich Market — the permanent open-air market in the centre, with its striped roofs — is one of the largest and oldest in the country and trades all year. Norwich Castle is a few minutes’ walk from the gardens.
