Winchester’s market sets its chalets in the Inner Close, in the lee of the cathedral, which gives it a hemmed-in, candlelit quality that street markets never manage. The 120-odd chalets lean heavily towards craft — ceramics, textiles, jewellery, woodwork — with a good share of Hampshire makers, and a charity chalet programme rotates local causes through the season. The ice rink sits alongside, and the cathedral’s own carol and service programme runs throughout, which is rather the point of coming here rather than to a city-centre market.
