Advent Bazilika Budapest

Christmas stalls and light projections in front of St Stephen's Basilica. 2026 dates not yet announced.

Dates to be announced

The organiser has not yet confirmed this year's dates, and the dates circulating online are either estimates or carried over from a previous year — so we are not publishing them as fact. The organisers' site still shows the 2025 season (14 November 2025–1 January 2026). Dates quoted elsewhere for 2026 are estimates.

Advent Bazilika is the Christmas market on Szent István tér, the square in front of Budapest’s St Stephen’s Basilica. Its best-known feature is the light show: after dark, a 3D projection plays across the basilica’s neoclassical façade, telling stories in light and colour. In front, an ice rink circles the Christmas tree, and stalls sell Hungarian crafts and food.

Why there are no dates here yet

The organisers’ website still shows the 2025 season, which ran from 14 November 2025 to 1 January 2026. Several travel sites are giving “expected” dates for 2026, but they are estimates, not announcements. We’ll add the dates as soon as they’re official.

What to expect

Based on recent years: kürtőskalács (chimney cake, baked on a spit and rolled in sugar, cinnamon or nuts), lángos, mulled wine and Hungarian sausages, and craft stalls. The market has run through Christmas to New Year’s Day.

Budapest’s other big market

A ten-minute walk away, Vörösmarty tér hosts Budapest’s other major Christmas market, at the northern end of the Váci utca shopping street. Visitors usually see both in an evening.

Getting there

Bajcsy-Zsilinszky út (M1) and Arany János utca (M3) metro stations are both a few minutes’ walk from the basilica, and Deák Ferenc tér, where three metro lines meet, is close by.

Make a day of it

Climb the basilica’s dome for a view across the Danube to Buda Castle. If the cold gets to you, warm up in one of the city’s thermal baths. The Széchenyi baths in City Park have outdoor pools that steam on a winter day.

When will we know?

We check the official source every week and will update this page the day the dates are confirmed. In the meantime, our What’s open? tool shows the markets that have confirmed dates for any day you’re travelling.
